Many years ago, when I was first in chiropractic practice I worked in an office with another chiropractor who spoke about how chiropractic helped him with a hiatal hernia that he suffered from. I had no idea at the time that chiropractic could do that, nor did I know that I possessed the skills to help others with similar kinds of conditions. In chiropractic school I had learned that there is a somato-visceral reflex (how the spine & nervous system affect organs) and a viscero-somatic reflex (how the organs affect the spine and nervous system). However, it wasn’t until I was in practice for many years that I saw how much the spine and nervous system affects every function of our bodies, including digestion and the function of our gastrointestinal tract. It was then that I began to treat patients with digestive problems and found that patients were getting better – significantly better – from the chiropractic care they received.
I believe that no matter what the condition(s) my patients come to me with that I help to restore the function of their nervous systems so that their bodies heal themselves. My job is to find and locate areas of subluxation within your spine and extremities and correct these neural disturbances. When our bodies are not able to self-heal and/or self-regulate, and we are not healthy, my training and experience tells me that we should look to the nervous system to find out why. When interferences to your nervous system are reduced and eliminated your body restores it’s in-born homeostasis, thus re-establishing health and harmony.
One of my adult patients told me that after more than a decade of being on various medications for digestive problems she was able to eliminate those medications (with the guidance of the MD who prescribed the medications) and rarely experienced any difficulties with her digestion after receiving chiropractic care in my office. She also stated that if she did experience a digestive upset she was able to manage it much better with the changes in her diet, exercise and homeopathic remedies I recommended to her.
Many of the patients I’ve treated over my career with digestive problems have related similar types of stories including the parents of babies that I’ve treated. I continually am awed and astounded by seeing how patients respond when subluxations are corrected.
